Collateral Damage: Stories of 9/11 from Afar (Upcoming)

Nine/eleven was a catastrophe like no other in recent American history, a horror shared by all Americans. Yet little has been published about its impact on the millions of Americans who were living away from the epicenters and who were not directly connected to one of the nearly 3,000 victims. Collateral Damage begins to fill this void and now, more than a decade after this fateful event, it is appropriate to employ a broader lens.

Collateral Damage: Stories of 9/11 from Afar vividly recalls the attacks as experienced away from the epicenter, the view from beyond the capital. These pieces chronicle the many ways that individuals had to adjust their sense of security and their country. How their sense of confidence and well-being were impacted.

More than anything, Collateral Damage evidences that 9/11’s impact was not limited by geography, race or economic status. Al Qaeda sought out that most precious intangible within all of us, our Americanism, and they hit their target hard. They made me, and millions of other Americans, question our most fundamental values and America’s place in the world. And yet, it also includes amazing stories of fortitude and resolve as millions of ordinary Americans, survive this assault on their personal epicenters. It is an important record of 9/11 and its aftermath from a viewpoint that has not yet been heard from and an important addition to the body of published 9/11 memoirs.
